EA Decisions and How to React - UGA Undergraduate Admissions EA Decisions and How to React Early Action decisions will be later this week, so here are my suggestions on how to react to the decision you may receive. Admit: Celebrate with family, buy a lot of UGA gear to wear for the holiday season, but remember that not everyone has received a decision of admission, and so be a little more low key with friends and classmates. In other words, do not run up to you best friend during English class and scream I got into Georgia while 10-15 of your classmates are mentally throwing daggers into your back. Deny: While this is not a fun situation at all, the reality is that if you have been denied Early Action, you are truly not competitive for admission at UGA. It is not easy to write that, and it is very difficult to tell this to a student or parent, but when we look at this students application in comparison with the other 11,600 EA applicants (and remember, we will get about 7,000 RD applicants as well), they do not match up academically with the others. It is better to tell you now instead of waiting until late March, as this gives you time to make other plans. Unless there seems to be a serious error (your are in the top of your class, take a very challenging course load, and have a strong test score), my suggestion is to not contact us about the decision, but instead move forward with plan B. While we do not mind talking with you at all, the reality is that an Early Action denial means an offer of admission from UGA is not a reality. Defer: This is the most challenging one, as these are applicants who are truly strong students, but we want to see more about them (as well as the rest of the applicant pool) before making a final decision. Please remember, this is not a denial at all, but instead a way for us to be able to review you in full, from your co-curricular activities, your essays, and your recommendations. This is your chance to let us know what you are like as an overall applicant. While this is probably not the answer you would like, I would suggest you treat it as a call-back for a second audition. Some roles have already been cast (or admitted), and we now want to look at you in more detail to see how you compare to the rest of the people auditioning (or applying). One of the worst things you can do is give up and not do part II. The second worst thing is to call us up and berate us for not admitting you. We will be happy to talk to people, but make sure to communicate in a positive tone, understand th at we cannot talk about other applicants, and please remember that defer does not mean denial. At the end of last year (after all decisions, both during March and Wait List offers in May), just under half of the deferred applicants who completed part II were later admitted. About 1300 deferred students did not complete part II, so we never even had a chance to even review them! If you are serious about UGA, take the time to complete your application, and then be patient as we review all of these files throughout Jan., Feb. and March. I hope this helps!

Lower Bar Pass Rates in NY In 2011, eight of New York’s 15 law schools posted improved bar pass rates compared with the year before. According to a New York Law Journal article, this year, eight of these 15 schools reported lower rates. The most dramatic plunge was reported by New York Law School which experienced a 70% pass rate in July. Last year the school’s pass rate was 80%. This drop pushed New York Law to last place ranking among NY’s law schools, following Touro Law Center (#14 this year and #9 last year) by a full percentage point. This year, Touro experienced the second largest percentage decline, from 83% last year to 74% this year. New York Law has established a â€Å"task force† called â€Å"Foundations for Success,† an 11-member committee that will prepare students better for the bar exam (including individualized coaching), as well as provide counseling support. City University of New York School of Law increased its pass rate from 67% to 83.5%, bringing its ranking up to 7th place. Last year the school ranked last of the 15 schools. Other New York law schools that experienced pass rate increases include Fordham University School of Law, Albany Law School, the Maurice A. Therefore, all people must be treated equally, regarding every person being entitled to the same set of basic human rights. Human rights are indivisible. No individual right is more important than the other; no individual right can be emphasized or, on the other hand, ignored for any reason. Characterization as indivisible shows no preference to one human right over another; thus, human rights are better utilized when applied to a person or body of people. From the 1920s to the 1990s Romani people were discriminated against in Germany, Czech Repub lic, Italy, Poland, Romania, and many other countries. Unjust acts such as: harsh punishment, exclusion, segregation from public businesses, refusal of services, and much more were imposed on the Romani people during this time. This was not a wrong-doing of the law enforcement at a local level, laws were passed preventing Romani people from even intermingling with non-Roma people when a wall was built dividing Romani from non-Romani people. Even storekeepers were forbidden from selling to the Romani. More disturbing than prevention of inhabiting freely amongst the communities, their education and image were marred by the stereotype that all Romani people did not deserve equal opportunity due to their ethnicity, language, and customs. Because these people did not speak the â€Å"accepted† dialect, they were deemed as ignorant and inferior; forced to attend school for the mentality disabled. In 2000, the ERRC (European Roma Rights Center) presented ample evidence of mistreatmen t of the Roma people at the United Nations Elimination of Racial Discrimination conference. Thomas Jefferson considers himself a contributor to the Age of Enlightenment. Through many of his writings he expands on the philosophies of the great European writers of that era – Rousseau, Locke, Hume, and Leibniz. In â€Å"The Declaration of Independence,† Jefferson directly adopts several themes found in the work of French writer Jean-Jacques Rousseau. In the opening of the â€Å"Declaration of Independence,† Jefferson lays out several main themes that reflect Rousseau’s concepts. Jefferson borrows from Rousseau’s thinking on equality and freedom when writing, â€Å"We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain inalienable Rights†¦Ã¢â‚¬  (Jefferson 80). Rousseau speaks of equality by disproving the philosophies of Thomas Hobbes and Hugo Grotius. These men support the concept that â€Å"human race†¦ refers only to a small, select class of people – the ruling class] (Rousseau 60). Rousseau thinks that the philosophies of these men lack justification and that â€Å"All men are born free, and everywhere he is in chains† (Rousseau 59). All men are equal only until they give up their freedom and equality in exchange for comforts and protection in their lives. In other words, Rousseau says man is born free, but because of society man become less and less free. The government, and its laws bind the people down, but the people gain benefits from the government. Jefferson sees to Rousseau in justifying colonial claims to independence. Jefferson writes, â€Å"Whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or abolish it†¦Ã¢â‚¬  (Jefferson 80). This reflects Rousseau’s thinking that, [the only foundation left for legitimate authority in human societies is Agreement] (Rousseau 61). Rousseau argues that all society exists because people have willingly granted rank and privilege to their ruler. When this agreement is broken, the ruling power is invalid. In â€Å"The Declaration of Independence,† Jefferson cites twenty-six examples of actions taken by the British monarchy that acts against the authority the American Colonies granted them. These form the basis of the declaration. Jefferson restates his thinking again saying, â€Å"A Prince, whose character is thus marked by every act which may define a Tyrant, is unfit to be ruler of a free People. † (Jefferson 83). Jefferson indirectly borrows from Rousseau’s argument against Might into Right. Rousseau says that this thinking reverses the process of cause and effect. â€Å"So soon as we disobey without impunity, disobedience becomes legitimate. And, since the Mightiest is always right, it merely remains for us to become possessed of Might† (Rousseau 62). In this passage Rousseau contends that might, or strength, is not a moral sanction. Rousseau contends that â€Å"Right† to govern can change when it is compromised. Jefferson uses this same line of thinking to rationalize the separation of the colonies from the British crown. But when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same Object evinces a design to reduce them under absolute Despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such government, and to provide new Guards for their future security† (Jefferson 80,81). Jefferson contends that the chain of abuses brought by the British crown has compromised their moral authority and therefore, their â€Å"Right† t o rule over the colonies. In Jefferson’s mind, the physical â€Å"Might† of the British is controversial in considering the colonies’ right to establish a new government. Interestingly, there is another opportunity for Jefferson to incorporate Rousseau’s philosophies into the declaration. Rousseau talks about slavery as an institution in â€Å"The Origin of Civil Society. † The original draft of the Declaration refers to the British crown’s introduction of slavery in the United States as one of the immoral principles justifying independence from the monarchy. In other words, â€Å"one of the fundamental paradoxes of Jefferson’s personal and political life has been his attitude toward slavery. † (Jacobus77). Jefferson’s position and actions on slavery have become the most controversial aspects of his legacy. It is not surprising that Rousseau’s philosophies lead to the beginnings of both the American and French revolution.
